Event Details

2020 Media Futures and the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre (MEIC) invite you to the first public presentation of 2020 Media Futures scenarios and the launch of MEIC's Mobile Accelerator Program.

This special event premieres and builds on a set of foresight scenarios to develop "Implications for Action"--what are the innovative strategies, services, perspectives that promise resilience and growth in the emerging media landscape over the next decade?

Why attend?
The purpose of 2020 Media Futures is to help 'future proof' the creative industries--book, magazine, music, film, TV, and interactive -- and foster innovation.

Format
We'll be using a unique hybrid event format--part scenario-driven strategy session, part bottom up "camp" for areas of hottest concern to attendees.

The morning will begin with the first public presentation of 2020 Media Futures foresight scenarios, which are imaginative narratives of possible futures. They are intended to inform strategic planning in the creative cluster through the next decade. A series of breakout sessions immediately following will explore opportunities, threats, and unexpected new features within each scenario.
Just before lunch we'll facilitate curation of topics for the afternoon's "camp" style workshops--topics chosen and led by participants will drive the discussion.

After noon, four breakout spaces over two rounds of four concurrent camp-style workshops--covering eight diverse but connected subjects. In each workshop the framer(s) of the topic will moderate and lead off the session with a 5-10 minute presentation. All participants will be asked to share insights, questions and experiences. We'll focus on practical implications for action based on experiences in your organization and industry. Lead by professionals--possibly you--we'll address key issues, innovations, impacts and opportunities in such areas as:
  • Business models
  • Policy innovation
  • Social media
  • Transmedia storytelling
  • Intellectual property
  • Creation & authoring
  • Distribution & licensing
  • Experience and interaction

Scenarios Preview

  • Ministry of Investment:  A commercially driven, risk-averse environment dominated by the two biggest telecommunications companies in the country, who move in lock step with each other
  • Lords of the Cloud: A commercially driven world of rapid technological innovation and adoption, affording new configurations of media partnerships, platforms and processes
  • Anthill: A Canadian media context characterized by slow-paced adoption of innovations, and a miniscule amount of funding for media arts development. Some welcome the inertia, embracing the “slow media” movement and eschewing “Big Content,” while others remain frustrated with the lack of opportunities for more traditional success
  • Wedia: A world of rapid, disruptive, and socially-driven change which sees many large institutions dissolve in the face of new forms and channels for invention and entrepreneurialism

2020 Media Futures is made possible with the support of the  Ontario Media Development Corporation, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

The Mobile Accelerator Program is made possible with the support of the City of Toronto and NRC IRAP.

2020 Media Futures

2020 Media Futures is an ambitious, multi-industry strategic foresight project designed to understand and envision what media may look like in the year 2020; what kind of cross-platform Internet environment may shape our media and entertainment in the coming decade; and how Ontario firms can take action today toward capturing and maintaining positions of national and international leadership. To examine these questions, 2020 Media Futures brings together researchers, creators, policymakers and other professionals representing the cultural and digital media industries.
